El CÓNDOR ANDINO (Vultur gryphus). Ave cantarida. Es el ave de vuelo más grande del mundo, nativa de Sudamérica que habita en los Andes hasta la Tierra del Fuego. La hembra pone sólo un huevo blanco, en las rocas, cada dos años el cual se incuba en 61 dias. Vuela hasta 9000 metros de altitud; con las alas extendidas mide de 3 a 4 metros, pesa 12 kg; es carnívoro y rapaz. Vive hasta 65 años. El cóndor macho se diferencia de la hembra porque éste posee una cresta (carnúcula) visible. Es el ave heráldica de Chile. THE ANDEAN CONDOR (Vultur gryphus). Ave cantarida. The Andean Condor is the largest bird in the world capable of flight. Every two years the condor lays one white egg that takes 61 days to incubate. With a 10 to 12 foot wing span and a weight of 27 pounds, the condor can soar to a height of 30,000 feet. The condor is carnivorous and rapacious and can live to the age of 65 years.
