Dr. Michael Bishku
Dr. Michael B. Bishku is Associate Professor of History at Augusta State University and teaches Middle Eastern, African and British Empire and Commonwealth courses. He received his Ph.D. from New York University in History and Middle East Languages & Literature in 1981. While doing research for his dissertation in Egypt, Dr. Bishku taught English at Ramses College for Girls in Cairo (1979-80). Before coming to ASU in September 1996, he taught at Edison Community College in Ft. Myers, Florida (1981-86); Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia (1986-87); the University of Nebraska at Kearney (1987-93); and the University of North Florida in Jacksonville (1993-96).
Dr. Bishku has
received Fulbright grants to study in Morocco and Tunisia (2001); Uzbekistan
(1997); Turkey (1988); and Pakistan (1984) and National Endowment for the
Humanities grants to do research at Duke University (1991) and the University
of Texas at Austin (1985). He is a past President of the Association of Third
World Studies (1995-96) and is currently Vice President-Elect of the American
Council for the Study of Islamic Societies. Dr. Bishku has published numerous
academic articles on modern Middle Eastern history and politics that have
appeared in such journals as Middle East Policy, Mediterranean Quarterly,
Conflict Quarterly, the Journal of South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
and Studies in Contemporary Islam and is a contributor to the recently published
Oxford Dictionary of Islam.
