Minutes
Faculty Policies
Committee
March 25, 2002
3:00 p.m.
Present: Roxann
Bustos (secretary), Barbara Coleman, Bill Dodd, Beth Fanning, Jim Garvey, Peggy
Ruth Geren, Paul Harris (chair), Andy Hauger, Donna Hobbs, Wayne Mixon, Jana
Sandarg, Bruce Saul
Minutes of the March 18 meeting were approved.
- Campus
Police in classrooms: Jasper
Cooke sent Paul Harris a copy of the Public Safety policy. Paul will copy and share this next
time. Jasper said the
particular incident we talked about related to a student’s car
blocking traffic. Andy Hauger
suggested that in this situation the car should be towed. Jasper is willing to come to an
FPC meeting to discuss the issue.
- Employee
Benefits Committee: Bill Dodd
and Jana Sandarg had suggestions of items to be added to the draft charge
that Barbara Coleman shared with us.
Paul will add these and send the charge on to the Employee Benefits
Committee.
- Cathy
Tugmon’s memo on Spring Break Schedule: Everyone agreed that it would be very difficult for
students to give up the Masters Week Break. The best alternative appears to be to insert another
two day break earlier in the semester. Jim Garvey said faculty can work unofficial breaks into
their schedules. Bill Dodd
suggested having Katherine Sweeney come to an FPC meeting to discuss
schedules. Paul will arrange
for this.
- Distance
Learning Committee: Bill Dodd
distributed proposals for the Distance Learning Committee to be made a
standing committee and for the chair of the Information Technology
Committee to be added as a member, and also for the chair of the Distance
Learning Committee to be added to the IT Committee membership. The committee agreed to send these
on the University Council for a vote by faculty.
- It
was agreed to have the proposed Student Email Policy sent to University
Council for presentation at the next faculty meeting.
- The
Committee looked at the University System of Maryland survey on the salary
of part-time non-tenure track instructional faculty.
- Bruce
Saul mentioned that faculty voting will take place on Tuesday and
Wednesday of this week and next.
He recruited volunteers to help with vote counting on Wednesday at
3:00 P.M. in the library conference room.
- Bill
Dodd said he will be unable to chair the Sub-Committee on Committees this
year. Andy Hauger
“enthusiastically” agreed to serve as chair. Dr. Bompart has
requested the committee assignments to be given to him by June 1.
- Several
committee members commented on the very successful Student Research
Conference and wondered how student attendance could be promoted. Beth
Fanning suggested a whole day (with no classes) should be set aside for
honoring student accomplishments; this would include both the Research
Conference and Honors Night.
Paul will mention this idea to the President at their next meeting
- There
will be no FPC meeting on April 15.
The meeting adjourned at 4:00 P.M.
