Minutes, Faculty Policies Committee, September 30, 2002, 3 p.m.

 

Present: Michelle Benedict, Barbara Coleman, Bill Dodd, Gordon Eisenman, Cliff Gardiner, Andy Hauger (chair), Donna Hobbs (acting secretary), Bill Reese, Jana Sandarg

 

Minutes of September 23, 2002 were unanimously approved.

 

Agenda items: Old Business

 

1.Cullum recommendations–Jana Sandarg presented a revised proposal on changes to the Cullum Series.   FPC approved these changes.  Andy Hauger will speak to Drs. Bloodworth and Sullivan about the logistics of implementation.

 

2. Employee Benefits Committee – The Survey of New Faculty regarding Employee Benefits was approved with a few clerical changes.  It will be sent to faculty mentors, who will be asked to deliver it to each new faculty member.

 

3. TRS retirement – The FPC will ask the Employee Benefits Committee to look at retirement issues, focusing on how to provide future retirees with the information they need to make sound retirement decisions.

 

4.  Lyceum Series Committee responsibilities –The proposal on changes in the Cullum series also involves a change in the responsibilities of the Lyceum committee that would encourage coordination of a Lyceum and Cullum event each year.  Jana Sandarg spoke to Dharma Thiruvaryaru, Lyceum Committee chair, about this change.  Thiruvaryaru will bring the issue to the full committee for discussion.

 

5.  Retention and Graduation Rate Study –Andy Hauger will ask FPC committee members to come up with a list of "hypotheses" that may explain low graduation and/or retention rates at ASU as well as a list of things we could do better in this area. Next week FPC will look at these issues and decide which should be studied more extensively.
