Faculty Policy Committee Minutes

February 21, 2005

Members present: Marc Miller, Janice Williams Whiting, Wayne Mixon, Barry Thompson, Tom Crute, Pam Hayward, Jana Sandarg and Katherine Sweeney

Marc Miller called the meeting to order at 3:15 p.m. The minutes of the February 14, 2005 meeting were distributed and approved unanimously.

Marc recapped the last University Council meeting for the group. Of particular note, the fall break proposal was sent back to Academic Policies for further study; the professional leave proposal was sent back to FPC for further study; the department head evaluation proposal was sent back to FPC for further study. The other proposals from FPC will be sent forward for the next faculty meeting. The group discussed the two proposals returned to them at length. They will continue these discussions at the next FPC meeting.

Cullum 2007: Jana Sandarg reported that there were a wide variety of topics submitted for the Cullum Lecture Series in 2007. The group narrowed the list to the following:

                        Year of Jazz

                        Korea

Ethical Issues (business ethics, bioethics, environmental ethics, etc.)
Literacy (reading literacy, information literacy, cultural literacy, social                                 literacy, etc.)

She will send an email to the faculty list asking that interested faculty send proposals relating to the above (following the guidelines of Section 204.5.2 of the Faculty Manual) to her by March 25, 2005.

Outstanding Faculty Member Award:  Janice Williams Whiting distributed a working document outlining the nomination and selection process her subcommittee has proposed. This was endorsed by FPC. There was also discussion of the selection process for the Bell and Wallace awards. Janice will draft documents outlining the processes for these and will bring to the next FPC meeting.

Faculty Manual Modifications: Pam Hayward provided documentation from the Academic Affairs Handbook concerning the new category of “lecturer”. She will draft a description of such for inclusion in the ASU Faculty Manual.

Promotion and Tenure Committee Structure: Pam and Marc shared feedback they had received from colleagues with the group. The group will continue to gather comments for discussion at a future meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:35 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Katherine Sweeney
