Peggy Ruth Geren called the meeting to order at 3:00 pm.
The committee unanimously approved minutes (with one minor change) from 12 September 05.
Ray Whiting discussed upcoming plans at ASU to study retention. The FPC was asked to review policies that may impact student success and retention. Dr. Whiting relayed that the ASU advising system will soon change and all students will have to see an advisor. This will impact the faculty work load and how they are reviewed under the Faculty Role Model. A discussion followed and the FPC was asked to undertake the following:
a) Identify policies that may contribute to poor retention.
b) Examine advising practices and how it is assessed.
c) Look at the Faculty Role Model and determine if advising is an important component.
Peggy Ruth led a discussion about the roles of Media Services and ITS in supporting evening faculty and weekend events (requiring faculty participation). The FPC will look at current support levels and ascertain whether there is an extensive need for increased services for evening faculty and weekend events. The FPC will ask the appropriate administrators about personnel costs and the possibility of having staff “on-call”.
The FPC continued discussions about the asbestos information we received from the Physical Facilities and Safety Committee. The FPC will soon schedule a visit from a representative from the physical plant to discuss the topic.
The FPC discussed compilation of changes to the Faculty Manual and the procedures to accomplish these changes . Further discussions will be held at our next meeting.
The FPC discussed issues that have been raised by faculty about new student activities policies. Peggy Ruth asked that we canvas the faculty and discuss it further.
Peggy Ruth said that the FPC subcommittee on faculty appointment to campus committees will have to meet soon. The FPC can determine if our current methods of appointment are satisfactory or if we need to change our procedures.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:35pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Bruce Saul
Secretary
