Faculty Policies Committee Minutes

3 October 2005

Members present: Peggy Ruth Geren, Pam Hayward, Donna Hobbs, Pam Jackson, Wayne Mixon, Rick Pukis, Bob Reeves, Bruce Saul, Jana Sandarg, Mike Searles

•  Peggy Ruth Geren called the meeting to order at 3:00 pm.

•  The committee unanimously approved minutes (with a minor change) from 19 September 05.

•  The FPC was asked to send out the weekly agenda to the faculty prior to their weekly meeting.

•  The FPC thanked Peggy Ruth for an excellent job on the New Faculty Luncheon. They wanted their thanks conveyed to President Bloodworth and Nancy Childers at the next opportunity.

•  The FPC discussed the requests made by Ray Whiting and decided to canvas the students about retention concerns during the Phi Kappa Phi Lecture Series on 13 October. Peggy Ruth will contact the Deans to make sure that students were reminded about the lecture. Areas of concern were noted and the committee will ask Katherine Sweeney to visit to help us answer some questions.

•  The FPC will recommend making changes to the Faculty Manual in order to incorporate our Director of Grants Administration into our committee structure.

•  Peggy Ruth said that the FPC subcommittee on faculty appointment to campus committees met last week and made a few changes. The current methods of appointment are unsatisfactory and we need to change our procedures. Rick Pukis volunteered to look at streamlining the process.

•  The FPC discussed issues that have been raised by faculty about new student activities policies. Peggy Ruth asked that we table this topic for the time being.

•  Peggy Ruth received correspondence from Media Services about supporting evening faculty. A part-time person will be hired to serve in that role.

•  The FPC will schedule a visit on 10 October from a representative from the physical plant to discuss the air quality in older campus buildings.

•  The meeting was adjourned at 4:35pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Bruce Saul

Secretary
