Golf instruction

Forest Hills Golf Club is the place to take your lessons. Our Director of Golf, David Usry, has been in the golf business for nineteen (19) years and has been a member of the PGA for thirteen (13) years. David has introduced hundreds of juniors and adults to the game of golf by using his simple, down-to-earth techniques.  He also helps long-time players understand their past frustrations and shows them how to patiently change one thing at a time to guarantee long-term improvement.

David played college golf at Georgia Southern University on a full golf scholarship where he was an all-time letter winner and also named to the Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s Golf All-Conference Team in 1983.  He was also part of the Trans America Athletic Conference Championship Team in 1983 before leaving to turn professional. He was selected All-American in 1981 and at one time was ranked 4th in the Nation as a Junior Golfer. A competitor in the Optimist Junior World Championship, David won the Georgia State Junior Championship.  He also won the Region 4-AAAA Championship every year in High School, one year having done so as the youngest player ever to win that event. David has owned six course records.

David has been interviewed by ESPN on Golf World for being selected by a panel of experts from Golf Digest to participate in the Schweppes/Golf Digest Golf Challenge through PGA Tour Qualifying. He once won the West Lake National Tournament, and he has recorded 6 Holes in One’s in his career. David has played on various tours winning numerous tournaments and has also won several PGA Section tournaments. As an amateur, David won over 50 tournaments.

Currently enrolled in the PGA Teaching Certification Program, Usry previously graduated from PGA Business School II in the Top 5% of his class. He was elected into the Professional Golfers Association in 1994.

Lessons and club fitting sessions are open to members and non-members alike. David offers the latest in teaching technology. He uses the Computer Golf Coach Swing analysis system, which is the same system that many of the stars of the game use to analyze and improve their swing. Visualization is the key to athletic improvement. The system will assist you in getting the most out of your instruction and will put you on a direct path of improved performance. It is also very important to make sure that you have the right clubs for your game, and David can also help you with that.

junior program

Usry has established a successful junior golf program, which is very popular not only to the members, but also to numerous kids throughout the Southeast.  David has also helped juniors win local, state, regional and national events.

In 1999, David established the Junior Golf Academy, which is now held at Forest Hills Golf Club, in an effort to inspire youth to get involved in the game. David understands that kids learn differently than adults and must be taught the game in a way that's understandable and fun.  He has been recognized by U.S. Kids Golf as a Personal Tee teaching professional and in 2001 was nominated for the PGA Junior Golf Leader Award by his fellow golf professionals for the Carolinas Section.  His curriculum is designed to provide balanced instruction and positive incentives to encourage young golfers to reach their full potential in the game.  The program offers a series of three-day camps during the months of June and July and is open to all youth between the ages of 7 - 16 years.

The program, which uses the latest in video technology, will encompass the following:

  • Putting
  • Chipping

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY: Golf is a game of a lifetime. It is a complex game to learn and play. The goal is to instruct players at any level the simple way to learn and improve their game. I emphasize and teach great fundamentals with a simple formula and believe that every golfer will be able to achieve their own level of enjoyment in golf. Depending on what areas of the game you would like to learn or improve, we can help the student attain their personal goals while being fun and valuable to their golf game.
