Now that you are a few weeks into the semester, you should be settling into an initial routine.
This section will give you some tips to keep you going in the right direction.
Know What You Expect of College
It is important for the days ahead to clarify for yourself what
you expect from your college education.
This helps lay a foundation for developing goals and
for planning strategies for their accomplishment.
Take a few minutes to reflect and then list your
top five expectations of your college experience:

To get the most out of your college experience, you will need to push yourself
beyond your ordinary limits. You may need to brush up on your study or test taking skills.
You may find that you need to improve your reading and comprehension skills.
Most professors expect students to be responsible participants in their own education.
Much like athletes in training, students must develop a study regimen and push themselves to
challenge their limits. It is, of course, important to reward yourself when you accomplish a
goal or meet a difficult task. So, remember to pamper yourself occasionally.
It is also important to pace yourself in order to maintain a balanced life style.
Use a Time Manager (like the ACES Weekly Planners) and the
Wellness guide (later in this section) to keep a check on that balance.
Be a Part of Class
Plan your time to be sure to arrive promptly for each class.
Come prepared with assignments and ready to take notes.
Sit near the front of class and take an active role in discussions.
Be attentive and alert by maintaining good eye contact with the instructor.
Avoid napping and yawning!
Questions and comments made in class should contribute to the current subject matter.
Personal queries and concerns are best discussed on an individual basis with the instructor.
You may want to schedule an appointment during his or her office hours.
Study For Success
The ability to study on schedule and effectively is one of the most important factors in
determining your success in college. There are a multitude of resources specifically
designed to enhance study skills - check out
Reese Library,
Media Center, and bookstores.
This ACES guide includes several tools and tips to get you started.
Review your Time Manager: Have you allocated at least
two hours of study time for every hour of class?
Have you included key dates (tests, assignments, presentations, etc.) for each of your classes?
The Progress Monitors (part of the Class
Profiles )
can help you maintain a focus on your
academic goals. You should keep them updated,
with a current calculation of your standing in each class.
ASU Counseling Center
offers a number of free programs to help you improve your study habits.
