Halfway Through
Checking Your Academic Progress
Weekly Planners
Step 1 Be aware of your standing in each of your courses. Use the Progress Monitors on the back of your Class Profile sheets. You should have a record of your scores on quizzes, tests and assignments. Check each course syllabus for information on how each instructor uses scores to calculate grades. If you are not sure, feel free to discuss this with your instructor.
Where are you in the completion of term assignments? If your instructor has given you a time-line, be sure you are staying on schedule. Do not wait until the last minute to catch-up, it is usually impossible. If necessary, use a time manager (such as the calendar pages in this guide) to schedule extra time now to devote to any outside projects.
Step 2 Talk to your instructor about your progress and, if needed, the possibility of extra credit or tutoring. You may be able to successfully complete a challenging course with assistance. (For example: FREE Math and English Help Labs are available through the departments; FREE seminars on Stress Management, Test Taking Skills, etc., are offered through Counseling Services.)
Step 3 Make an appointment with an advisor in your advising department to review your concerns about your progress. You should consider how continuing or withdrawing from the course would affect your degree plan. (For example: students in the Learning Support program must follow strict guidelines concerning their course options; financial aid recipients may have "academic progress' requirements to remain eligible for their aid; students with CPC deficiencies have to satisfy these within a specific time frame; some courses are only offered certain semesters - withdrawal could put you out of sequence.)
Step 4 If you determine that withdrawing from a course is your best option, then you must initiate and complete withdrawal on or before midterm to withdraw without grade penalty. Withdrawal forms are available in Student Records (Payne Hall) and must be signed by the course instructor.
Step 5 Take advantage of the wide range of FREE co-curricular programs and services available to support your academic goals. For information, read the Student Activities calendar, the Campus Club Boards, and the Bell Ringer.
