Due
to differences in departmental size and advising needs, advising
procedures vary among departments. You
should acquaint yourself with your advising
area's current procedures.
The departmental secretary is usually
an excellent source for this information.
Some sample questions you might ask are:
- How are advisors assigned within this department?
- Who is my advisor?
- Where is my advisor's office located?
- What is the best way to contact my advisor?
- What are my advisor's office hours?
- What procedures do I follow for priority registration?
- May I schedule an appointment for advising prior to priority registration week?
- What are the department's office hours?
If you are unsure of which department is your advising department,

You should take the initiative to establish a good working relationship with your academic advisor.
Most departments have checksheets to help you identify the required coursework.
This information, used in conjunction with your catalog, will help you develop your
educational plan and track yourself toward graduation.
Periodically, review this plan and your academic progress with your advisor.
Keep in regular contact with your advising department, and
keep the University current on how to contact you (visit
Student Records in Payne Hall to update your phone number or mailing address).
