Major Decisions:
Narrow
Narrow Your Choices
After exploring your options, you should now begin to NARROW your choices. As you earn from fifteen to twenty-nine semester class credit hours, you should set aside time to begin matching what you have learned about your personal interests, talents, and preferences with the information you have gathered on occupations and training. You will want to begin crystallizing your goals, narrowing your focus to two or three fields of interest to investigate further. The activities in this section help you clarify the academic challenges surrounding your area of focus and the occupational outlook.

After reading over this section (green), you should begin by checking the Semester Planning Calendars for the key dates in the term and then set aside specific time to work on this section. To maximize the outcomes, remember to also set aside time to prepare questions, and refresh your basic knowledge before appointments. Check your term planning schedule before making appointments to avoid peak stress times such as midterm and priority registration. Use the 'Where to Find It' map included in this section for key phone numbers and locations.

By the end of this section, you should have narrowed your choices to the point of selection. Arriving at this point may require you to repeat parts or all of this section. You may also need to refer to information gathered in the previous section, or to re-visit support resources. Remember that there are many paths to your goals and your current task is just to find the path on which you want to begin.

Take a few minutes to renew your focus as you begin to NARROW.

  • What two or three areas do you want to investigate further?
  • What interests you about each of these areas?
  • What concerns do you have about pursuing each of these areas?

If you have difficulty answering the above questions, you may not yet be ready to take the next step - you may benefit from repeating some of the activities in the EXPLORE section.

If you are able to answer the questions, then begin to investigate your target major choices by going to the next page...
