Major Decisions:
Select
Interview Professionals
For a more in-depth investigation of your selected field of interest, an “informational interview” with a professional in your selected field provides a useful format for testing your initial concepts. The academic department offering your selected major is a good place to begin either with a professor in your field of study or through referral by the academic department to a professional working in your field of interest. The Career Center (see map) is another source of professional contacts.

Adequate preparation is essential for an effective interview. Review all the material at your disposal. Compile a list of questions to help you verify your match to this field of interest. Here are some examples to get you started:

  • What would an entry level position in this field comprise?
  • What kinds of skills do you see as particularly important for this field?
  • What attracted you to this field?
  • What constitutes “success” in this field?
  • What is the biggest challenge to professionals in this field?

The staff at the Career Center can give you some tips on how to prepare yourself for an “informational interview” and guide you toward appropriate reference material. You should demonstrate your appreciation of a professional's time by your preparedness, organization, and informed interest in their field. Even if you later decide to try a different career path, you always want to leave those you contact with a positive impression of yourself.

Schedule appointments with people
working in the field you are considering.

Be considerate of their time and efforts
by being prompt and appreciative.

As you speak with professionals representing the field you are interested in, take notes on what you discuss.

  • Who did you meet? What are their jobs?
  • What did you discuss?
  • What did you learn about the field?
