A Transition Support tool from Augusta State University Academic Advisement

What is a transfer student?
A transfer student is an undergraduate who has previously attended a regionally accredited institution of higher education and who plans to permanently attend Augusta State University. (A student whose only attendance has been at a regionally accredited technical college in a "Non-College Transfer Program" is considered an entering freshman.)

Who advises transfer students?
Students who have an area of specific interest should declare the appropriate major and seek advisement in that department as they are the best source of information. (Students with fewer than 40 semester hours earned who have not chosen a major are advised in UMAC.) Transfer students should alert their advisor to previous coursework.

When do transfers register?
If attending ASU for the first time, you should attend an Orientation program and, if offered, register early as part of the program. Otherwise, you register by class (freshmen, sophomores, etc.) according to the published campus schedule. Consult the schedule for your day and time to register and contact your advising department to become familiar with that department's advising/registration procedures. (The general registration procedure is outlined in Q&A: How Do I Register? from UMAC.)

What is a transfer credit evaluation?
A transfer credit evaluation shows transferred courses with ASU equivalents, transferred courses without ASU equivalents, and courses that did not transfer. The Registrar's Office enters into the student information system your work attempted at other accredited institutions from official transcripts. The system then evaluates this work. D grades will transfer for any course in which a D is acceptable for ASU students. Coursework taken at the lower division (e.g. 1000 or 2000 level courses) cannot be transferred into a course which ASU teaches at the upper division (3000 or higher) level. For example, 'Principles of Marketing' taken at a junior college cannot be used in lieu of ASU's MKTG3700.

The Registrar's Office sends a copy of your evaluation to you and to your advising department. Students with a transferred course without an ASU equivalent may pursue the matter further by taking appropriate support documentation to the chair of the department offering similar coursework. If you intend to register for any courses which require specific prerequisites, you must have all necessary course equivalencies and/or prerequisite bypass permissions set on-line prior to registration.

Your advisor may view your transfer work by utilizing the ASU student information system.

To find out how your transfer courses fit into a major at ASU, consult with the ASU catalog and an advisor in the department offering the major you are interested in pursuing (see Q&A: Where's My Major?). You may have several hours of transfer work which do not fit into a specific degree program at ASU, so, for example, a student with an associate's degree may find that he or she needs more than two additional years' work in order to earn a bachelor's degree.

What is the residency requirement for transfers?
To receive a bachelor's degree from Augusta State University, you must complete 30 hours of upper division courses (3000-4000 level) at ASU (20 hours for an associate's degree). At least 30 of these hours must be completed after achieving senior status (90 or more semester hours).

What are the legislative requirements?
You must demonstrate knowledge of US History, Georgia History, the US Constitution, and the Georgia Constitution. Normally, ASU students meet these requirements by taking POLS1101 and either HIST2111 or HIST2112. Transfers who have taken a POLS1101 and/or a US History course which do not satisfy the Georgia requirements should contact the ASU Testing Center to schedule a test to prove this knowledge.

How many Humanities courses are required?
At ASU, students are required to take HUMN2001 and 2002 for a total of 8 semester hours. These are courses which combine literature with art and music of various time periods. It is possible for some transfer courses in literature, art appreciation, music appreciation, speech, etc. to count in lieu of these ASU Humanities courses. Contact the Languages, Literature & Communications Department for clarification on a particular transfer course.

What is the Physical Education requirement?
If you are seeking a bachelor's degree, you are required to take three courses in Physical Education. The requirement includes a three hour Wellness & Fitness course, a course in aquatics (WELL14xx), and one additional activity course (WELLxxxx). If you are physically unable to participate in regular WELL courses, you will be allowed to complete your WELL requirements with specially adapted courses.

What is the Regents' Test (RTP)?
You must demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing skills by passing both parts of the Regents' Test. The test is administered each term (just after midterm). If you transferred in over 30 hours of credit, you should take the test during your first term of enrollment at ASU. If you successfully passed (or transferred in) ENGL1101 & 1102 and are not successful on the Regents' Test, you will be required to take remediation (ENGL0510 and/or 0520).
