Core Area A course descriptions

ENGLISH POLICY: After earning 20 semester hours, a student must register for ENGL1101 until successfully completed. After earning 30 semester hours, a student must register for ENGL1102 until successfully completed.

ENGL 1101 - College Composition I (3)

Prerequisite: No Prerequisite

Composition I focuses on skills required for effective writing in a variety of contexts, with emphasis on exposition, analysis, and argumentation. This course also includes introductory use of a variety of research skills. (A grade of C or better is required.)

ENGL1102 - College Composition II (3)

Prerequisite: ENGL 1101 with a grade of C or better

Literature-based, Composition II develops writing skills beyond the levels of proficiency required in ENGL1101. Interpretation and evaluation are emphasized, and more advanced research methods are incorporated. The course includes instruction in composition of a research paper. (A grade of C or better is required.)

ENGL 1113 - Honors Freshman Composition I (3)

Prerequisite: Eligibility for honors English/invitation of the department.

This course incorporates study of texts by some of the world’s most influential thinkers into a framework which develops skills in critical reading, critical thinking, and writing at a level more advanced than is possible in 1101. (A grade of C or better is required. A student who fails to make at least a C must take ENGL1101.)

ENGL 1114 - Honors Freshman Composition II (3)

Prerequisite: ENGL1113 satisfactory completion/Eligibility for honors English/invitation of the department.

Based in literature which reflects cultural diversity, ENGL1114 explores a greater variety of literature and of theoretical approaches to literature than is possible in ENGL1102. This course includes instruction in library and computer-based research and correct reporting and documenting of research in a lengthy paper. (A grade of C or better is required. A student who fails to make at least a C must take ENGL1102.)

MATH 1111 - College Algebra (3)

Prerequisite: Two units of high school algebra/MAT0099 successful completion or equivalent.

A study of the real number system, exponents, equations and inequalities, relations and functions, systems of linear equations and inequalities, linear programming, polynomial functions, and exponential and logarithmic functions. (No credit for this course if credit earned in MAT 1101.)

MATH1101 - Introduction to Math Modeling (3)

Prerequisite: Two units of high school algebra/MAT0099 successful completion or equivalent.

An applications based introductory study of functions using models of real-world phenomena. Linear, quadratic, polynomial, logarithmic, and piecewise-defined models of real-world phenomena will be explored. Inverse of function, composition of functions, matrices, and systems of linear equations are additional topics which will be included. (No credit for this course if credit earned in MAT 1111.)

MATH 1113 - Precalculus Mathematics (3)

Prerequisite: MATH 1111/1101 or equivalent.

Students may enroll in MATH1113without MATH 1111/1101 provided they have two units of high school algebra + 1 unit of geometry + a SAT-Math score of 540 or greater + a high school GPA of 2.5 or greater.

A study of the real number system, theory of equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometric functions.
