ASU Honors Program
ASU offers special opportunities to qualified undergraduates to pursue a program of study that leads to recognition as an ASU Honors Graduate. In most cases, Honors Program courses are smaller in size, involve more interaction and exploration, and may be substituted for required credits. Students may seek entry to the program by submitting an application and a letter of intent/essay of professional goals to Dr. Beth Fanning, ASU Honors Program. Entering Freshman who have combined SAT scores of at least 1160 and a cumulative HSGPA of at least 3.2 or who have combined SAT of at least 1100 and a cumulative HSGPA of at least 3.5 will be invited to join the program. Students already enrolled at ASU who have completed 10 semester hours of academic work at ASU, have an overall GPA of 3.4, and are not currently in Learning Support may also apply.
Credit by Examination
Students may receive college credit
for certain courses by presenting satisfactory standardized test scores. Credit
by examination is listed as such on the transcript along with the course
number, title, and hours of credit. No grade is assigned and the credit is not
included in computing the GPA. Credit by examination is limited to 10 semester
hours in a discipline and 30 semester hours in the university. Contact the
Foreign Language Placement
A students with two units of high school foreign language who wishes to study a language will not receive credit for the first course (French, Spanish, German, Latin 1001) of that same language at ASU, and will be required to take a placement test to determine the appropriate beginning course in that language at ASU. If the student places in 2001 and successfully completes that course with a C or better, the student receives credit for both 2001 and 1002. If a student places in 2002 and successfully completes that course with a C or better, the student receives credit for 2002, 2001 and 1002. If a student places at the 3000 level and successfully completes any course at that level with a C or better, the student receives credit for that course plus credit for 2002, 2001 and 1002. (Native speakers may not enroll in courses below the 3000 level.) If a student does not place out of the 1001 level, the student may begin at 1001 for non-credit, or choose to begin in a different foreign language. If a student wishes to study a language not studied in high school, the student may begin at 1001 level and receive credit for that course. To sign up for the next placement test, contact the Department of Languages, Literature, and Communications (737-1500, Allgood Hall, 2nd Floor). The test takes about an hour and a testing fee is charged.
Math Placement
If a student would like to take
something higher than MATH 1111 or MATH 1101 as a first Math class, he/she
should first understand the prerequisites listed with the course descriptions. Then the student should
contact the Department of Math and Computer Science (Hardy Hall, 737-1672) for
permission if the student qualifies to bypass prerequisites.

Overload
The normal course load of a full-time undergraduate is 15-18 semester hours (full time is 12 semester hours). A student should carefully consider the advisability of taking an overload; he/she should not attempt to do so solely for financial reasons. An Advisor may approve a student for more than 18 semester hours if he/she meets the necessary conditions.
