Grade Point Average
The term 'GPA' is somewhat ambiguous because each student actually has several GPA's. The following are simplified explanations of the different types of GPA's. (GPA's for major/minor coursework may also be calculated for certain programs.)
·
Regents GPA - the cumulative average of
every grade received at
·
Institutional GPA - the average of grades
received in all courses taken at
This GPA is used in determining graduation eligibility as well as whether or
not a student is placed on academic probation or academic suspension.
·
Term GPA - the average of grades earned
in one particular term at
·
Transfer GPA - the average of grades that
have transferred in from other schools. A transfer student may begin at
· Overall GPA - the average of all grades earned in college level work. This includes all work on all college transcripts and is used to determine eligibility for graduation with honors.
To Calculate a Grade Point Average:
1. Convert the grades to quality points. Multiply the letter grades'values by the number of credit hours attempted in each course. Letter grades have the following values: A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1; F=0; WF=0. (I, W, S, U, V, K, and NR are not included in the determination of GPA.) For example, if a student earns a C in a 3 hour course, the quality points would be 6 (2 grade points x 3 credit hours = 6 quality points).
2. Add all the quality points.
3. Add all the hours attempted (except for classes with W).
4. Divide total quality points by total hours attempted. The quotient, truncated to two decimal places, is the GPA.
Academic Probation
Students who earn an Institutional GPA of less than 2.00 will be placed on academic probation. Students on probation may continue in attendance provided they meet the following minimum requirements based on "credit level." The credit level is the sum of all hours, including transfer credit, for classes in which the student earned any grade other than W.

Academic Suspension
Students who are on probation and fail to meet the minimum requirements specified for students on probation will be suspended. The time of the suspension will be a minimum of one semester for the first suspension, two semesters for the second suspension, and three semesters for all suspensions thereafter. After the mandatory period has passed, students may begin the process for reinstatement by petitioning the dean of the appropriate school in writing at least thirty days prior to the desired term of reinstatement.
Classification
An undergraduate is classified on the basis of the number of hours of academic credit earned at the time of registration.

Dean's List
The Dean's Lists for each of the three schools are compiled each term for undergraduate students. To qualify for this academic honor, a student must earn 9 or more semester hours in undergraduate coursework numbered 1000 or above, achieve a GPA of 3.66 for the term, and receive no grade of I, F, or WF during the term.
