What is a transient student?

A transient student is a degree candidate at another institution ("home institution") who is granted the privilege of temporary registration at Augusta State University for up to two terms of consecutive enrollment. Every student registered at Augusta State University accepts the official academic regulations (refer to the current ASU Catalog).

How does a transient student register for classes at ASU?

Just prior to each registration period, special registration packets are available in Admissions and the Center. A student may also use Adobe Acrobat to print a Registration Worksheet as PDF. The course schedule booklets are available near the beginning of registration in Student Records (Payne Hall, first floor) and on campus network computers. (Updated open class listings are also posted in the Center.) Transient students should seek advising assistance in the department(s) offering the course(s) in which they wish to enroll. After selecting courses and establishing necessary prerequisites on-line, they then follow the registration procedure outlined in Q&A: How Do I Register? [Leave Edge] from the Center.

Prerequisites are critical!
Students should consult the current ASU catalog and/or the academic department
offering the courses for which they intend to register.

Prior to registration, students must submit to the chair of the
department in which the course is offered a transcript
showing successful completion of required prerequisite courses.

The department must grant permission on-line before a student may register.

When may transient students register for classes?

Transients register as a category, not by class year. Consult the published campus schedule for the day and time for 'transient' registration.

What courses will be accepted by a transient's home institution?

To find out how courses taken as a transient at ASU will apply toward a degree program, transient students should consult with an advisor at their home institution.

What about Financial Aid?

To receive Financial Aid to attend ASU, transient students must have previously made arrangements with the Financial Aid Office at their home institution. If you are to receive financial aid, they should be prepared to pay fees by the due date and be reimbursed by their home institution after the term has begun.

How are ASU grades reported to the home institution?

As a courtesy to transient students, Augusta State University Student Records automatically reports their grades to the home institution. Any holds on a student's record must be cleared before grades can be released.

How may a transient continue at ASU?

To renew status as transient after two terms, students must reapply to Augusta State University, submit written approval from their home institution, and schedule an interview with the ASU Director of Admissions.

To learn about transferring to ASU, consult the ASU Admissions Office.

What about ID cards, parking permits, and books?

All students should have an ASU ID made when beginning at ASU. After paying fees, students should take the receipt and a photo ID by the Student Activities Office (Washington Hall, second floor). This permanent card must be validated for each term of enrollment. The ASU ID card serves as a library card, is necessary for use of campus facilities and labs, allows free transportation on Augusta public buses, and provides free admission to most ASU plays, Lyceum programs, films, and home games.

Every student parking on campus must have an ASU parking sticker displayed on his or her car. These parking permits, valid through Summer quarter, may be purchased in ASU Police Department (off Arsenal Avenue behind Allgood Hall).

It is often advisable to purchase textbooks after classes have begun. The ASU Bookstore (Washington Hall, first floor) has extended hours on the first two days of each term. A used book exchange (Washington Hall lobby) is operated at various times during the first several days of classes (See posted hours).
