ADV103:

New vs. Returning Students

Advising Support from UMAC

Students enter or return to ASU in an array of categories. To provide assistance, advisors should have an understanding of the basic distinctions as listed below.

New Undergraduates

Each semester, Augusta State University holds orientation for new undergraduates. Participants have the opportunity to register early in orientation. (New students who do not attend orientation register on registration day according to the published campus schedule). To be eligible to participate, new undergraduates should have completed the admissions process, including any required testing and outstanding documents (e.g. immunization certification, official transcripts).

For Fall semester, there are multiple orientation sessions throughout the summer, some with specific target groups. For Spring and Summer Orientations, a single program held prior to each of these terms addresses all new undergraduates.

Prior to registration, new undergraduates should contact the Admissions Office to make any changes in major, admission term, name, address, telephone number, etc. Questions regarding orientation should be directed to Annie La Force, Student Activities Office.

New Graduate Students

The individual graduate programs are responsible for orientation, advising, and registration of graduate students. Students should contact their graduate program advisor to determine advising and registration procedures. (Graduate students do not attend undergraduate orientation.)

New Non-Degree Seeking Students

New non-degree seeking students (transients, post-bacs, post-grads, and audits) should register on registration day. Non-degree seeking students should seek advisement in the department(s) offering the course(s) for which they wish to enroll. The department must grant permission on-line before the student may register.

A graduating ASU senior who plans to continue at Augusta State University as a post-bac should reapply through the Admissions Office and then register on registration day.

New Joint Enrolled Students

Scott Argo, Admissions, is responsible for orienting and advising Joint Enrolled high school students. This type of enrollment is designed to provide academic opportunities unavailable in the high school curriculum. While Joint Enrolled students may attend cocurricular events, they are not eligible to officially travel nor join any ASU student organization, club, or team. Joint Enrolled students should contact Scott Argo prior to each term of enrollment.

Former ASU Student Returning with No Additional Coursework

A student who has not attended Augusta State University in the past year and has not attempted coursework elsewhere must reapply through Student Records at least 30 days prior to registration. A student sitting out less than one year who has not attempted coursework elsewhere may register by first contacting his/her advisor. (Continuing students should maintain the currency of their personal information with Student Records.)

Former ASU Student Returning as a Transfer

A student who has attempted coursework at another institution since his/her last date of enrollment at ASU must reapply through our Admissions Office prior to the application deadline for the desired term of enrollment and is considered a new transfer. Once accepted by Admissions as a transfer, the student may either attend orientation or register on registration day at the time appointed.

Transient Student at ASU Returning as a Transfer

A student who previously attended ASU as a transient student and has changed his/her status to transfer student is treated as a new student. Once accepted by Admissions as a transfer, the student may either attend orientation or register on registration day at the time appointed.
