Screening

Advising Support from UMAC

Whenever possible, students should be screened in order for you to provide the most accurate information and efficient service possible. It is usually most helpful to run each student's current "Academic Summary" using WTRN100 on BANNER. The following are some key points to look for when screening students.

Learning Support/University College

Students should be screened to ascertain any Learning Support or University College requirements. Indications of Learning Support issues may be 0096/0097/0099 courses on student schedule sheet, BANNER check (SOAHOLD), or verbal cues from the student. Students who are currently taking Learning Support courses or are part of University College may have a declared major and may change that major in Student Records if they wish. However, until they successfully exit the Learning Support and/or University College programs, they must be advised in the Learning Support/University College department.

Major

Prior to an advising/registration session, an advisee should be screened to verify that the major indicated on BANNER (SGASTDN) matches the advising department. A different major may complicate advising support as materials will have been distribute to the department of record and the student's registration could be blocked by an Alternate/Term PIN. To maximize advising supports, a student should make any change in major early in the term at Student Records, Payne Hall.

Academic Status

An advisee’s academic status should be checked prior to an advising session to determine academic standing. Students whose academic standing indicates “Suspension” are not eligible to register until an application for reinstatement has been made to the appropriate dean and the student has been reinstated. Academic standing may be checked on BANNER (SGASTDN, "Standing" button)

Holds

Prior to registration, a student must have all holds that block registration cleared. There are some holds that do not block registration such as transcript holds and cash only holds, however, most will block a student’s registration. Holds such as library and traffic fines must be cleared prior to registration. Some holds such as Learning Support, University College, CPC or RTP require that a student register on campus (not by ELROY web or ASTRO phone). A student attempting to register on ELROY or ASTRO will have any holds that block registration listed. Holds may also be checked on BANNER (SOAHOLD); if a hold is indicated, then check dates "From" and "To" for applicable time period. Holds must be removed by the originator.

New Students

To be eligible to register, new students must first complete the admissions process including any required testing or outstanding documents (certificates of immunization, official transcripts, etc.). Departments may choose to pre-advise new students, however all new students must attend orientation to be eligible for early registration. Prior to initial registration, students should contact Admissions for any changes in major, name, address, etc. (Remember that “new” student information takes priority over any dated general student information but holds may still block registration.) Admissions information may be checked on BANNER (SAAADMS).
