Other Graduation Issues

Advising Support from UMAC

Graduation Exercises

Degrees are conferred formally at the close of Spring Semester in May and at the close of Fall Semester in December. (Students who complete all degree requirements by the end of Summer Term receive degrees in December and can have a notation made on their transcript indicating completion of requirements, however, degrees are not conferred until graduation exercises.)

Degree candidates are expected to attend graduation exercises. To be excused, a student must write a request to the Associate Registrar and indicate where his/her diploma should be sent.

Students and/or their family members having special assistance needs should contact ASU's Disability Services Coordinator at (706)737-1471. A signer is routinely present at graduation and information on special seating is provided by the Registrar’s Office.

A photographer is present at graduation. Students will receive their proof by mail and information on ordering additional copies.

An ASU employee may present a graduating relative his/her diploma. Employees should contact the Registrar’s Office to coordinate.

Graduation with Honors

Excellence in academic work is recognized at graduation by the award of honor rank in general scholarship and is determined by the student’s overall GPA (the average of all grades earned in all college level work including all work on all college level transcripts). This distinction of high academic achievement is placed on the student’s diploma and is noted on the permanent record.

     Overall GPA........................Honor
     3.85 or greater....................summa cum laude
at least 3.65 but less than 3.85...magna cum laude
at least 3.50 but less than 3.65...cum laude

A student who has transferred to Augusta State University is eligible to graduate with honors only if the grade point average for his or her entire college career meets one of the above requirements and the student has completed at least half of his or her courses in residence.

Payment of Financial Obligations

No student will be permitted to graduate if he or she is in default on any payment due to the university.

Preparing for Post-Graduation

While completing graduation requirements and earning a degree is foremost in students’ minds, they must also plan for life after graduation. Some things to consider:

§         Prior to their senior year, students should assess their practical work experience in their chosen field and consider the Co-op program, internships, volunteer work, and cocurricular leadership activities as a means to augment their experience.

§         Seniors are encouraged to get their resumes on board with the Career Center midway through their senior year by registering for one of the Job Search Seminars. The next steps place the student’s creditials into a database allowing them access to employer openings and the world wide web.

§         The Counseling & Testing Center has information on graduate school admissions tests and the Discover program can help locate graduate programs in a particular area.

§         The College of Business, College of Education, and Department of Psychology at Augusta State University offer graduate programs.

§         Graduating ASU Seniors who plan to continue at Augusta State University as post-bac students must reapply through the Admissions Office and must register on registration day (may not priority register).
