Advising
Edge Network
|
In October of 1996, ASU participated with colleges and universities from
across the In adapting the model for our campus, we scheduled quarterly meetings, just before preregistration, of those engaged in the advising process. Although these meetings are open, advising departments & advising support services were asked to designate someone to represent their area at these meetings and to act as a key contact for advising related campus concerns. Our meetings were modeled on other successful network designs: a brief opportunity for informal networking precedes presentations of topical advising issues, followed by a general question and answer forum. Networks also take on such projects as advisor training workshops,
newsletters (primarily focused on registration issues), advising handbooks,
and other such developmental tools. Much of this we already have in place on
our campus - Advisors' Handbook, Advisors' Notes, Advisors' Workshop Series.
Most of the networks are just beginning to utilize technology such as the web
and these pioneers report a resultant strengthening of their systems. In
Winter 1997, the Advising Edge Network web site was launched by It seemed particularly appropriate as we planned for the transitions ahead, to build an informational support net for those involved in this vital process on our campus. Network members are encouraged to actively participate in meetings and to contribute short pieces on advising, and brief updates of what's new in their area. Ideas, suggestions, or questions with respect to the Advising Edge Network should be addressed to either Kathryn Thompson, or Katherine Sweeney. |
