I. Informal Networking

Participants arrived beginning around 1:45pm, everyone enjoyed some light refreshments, and the meeting began at 2:00pm.

II. Special Topics & General Forum

§         What We Wished Students Knew About College After the participants mingled and enjoyed refreshments, Kathy Thompson opened the program with a brainstorming session of What We Wished Students Knew About College (categories for discussion included Personal Freedom, College Courses, College Professors, Studying in College, College Tests, Grades in College). Katherine Sweeney read a great list of suggestions from Bill English. JoAnn Yawoski, John O'Shea, Fred Maynard, John Groves, Barbara Stewart, Karen Hayes, Joyce Jones, Anita McDaniel, Deltrye Holt, Mary Lisko, Ernestine Thompson s hared their thoughts with the group. Participants were asked to sign their cards and turn them in with their nametags at the end of the program. The suggestions will be utilized for new students supports.

§         What We Need To Know About SU99 (&FA'99) Referencing the Edge SU'99 Calendar, Katherine Sweeney reviewed key dates, and pointed out the "sessions" and various "registrations", stressing the need for those using Financial Aid to sign up for all summer classes during Priority Registration or on May 11. Noel Brock noted further that students currently receiving Financial Aid who intend to enroll summer, must stop by the Financial Aid Office and sign up. Katherine noted that although students may take up to 18 hours, careful consideration is needed in the selection of summer load due to the compacted nature of these course. She offered the good news that summer athletic and student services fees would be reduced for the summer term, and that web information was being adjusted accordingly (printed booklets do not reflect the adjustment, but the catalog does). Copies of the Advisors' Notes for SU99 Priority Registration, and Priority Registration Help (brochure) were distributed. (Representatives also received departmental packets of newsletters.)

Katherine announced that FA99 course information should be available by mid-April to allow students an opportunity to meet with their advisors while still on campus. Kathy pointed out that for those departments that use an additional term PIN, there will be a brief period when they will be handling both SU99 & FA99 Term PIN lists. To help distinguish these, Bill English offered to make "5" the first number of the summer Term PINs, and "8" the first number for fall. Noel Brock asked that students be reminded to complete their applications for next year's aid now.

Mary Filpus-Luyckx presented a Banner Update, pointing out some of the positive features of the upcoming software upgrade. The upgrade is significant and will require some additional training for users. Several areas will be testing the upgrade, with general use anticipated in June.

Tim Bond provided the group with copies of the Important Information for New Undergraduates for SU'99, and the piece for FA'99 Orientation which students receive in their acceptance packets.

§         Advising Conference Reports Continuing the effort to share information gathered at recent conferences (Georgia Advisors' Conference '99 and the 1999 NACADA Region IV Conference), c onference participants gave an overview of the latest Hot Advising Topics. Sarah Hammond presented the key elements involved in Successful Group Advisement, noting when group advisement is appropriate, some key elements, and how to keep it personal. Tim Bond told of other area institution's approaches to Fostering Student Success, relating some of these efforts to similar initiatives on our campus. Kathy Thompson shared some thoughts from recent conferences on Advising's Role in Retention as an institutional effort, and noted some of the challenges ahead in the 21st century.

§         What's New Around Campus Participants were then asked to share what was new in their areas or what they wished students knew about their areas. Anita McDaniel related the transfer issues surrounding Humanities, reminding advisors to refer students with art and music appreciation courses which may fulfill these requirements to the department (LLC). Kathy shared Karen Sisk's note regarding The College Composition Connection course being offered to high school juniors and seniors through CE this summer. Barbara Stewart shared that financial aid checks would be ready for pick up on May 20. Sarah Hammond clarified that students could find their academic standing by calling ASTRO and listening to the full report of their grades. She noted further that this information is also included on the Student Academic Summary sheet available on Banner (WTRN100). Tim Bond announced the addition of Where's My Class? to the the Center website which provides a simple classroom layout of the main six academic buildings.

III. Next Network Meeting: Wed Oct 27, 1999
