Joe Viganti '60

  1. What’s your name?   
    R. J. Viganti

  2. Where do you live?
    2808 Walton Way – one of the few things older than me – built in 1915

  3. What is your age?
    Somewhere between 16 and 106! Really 69, but only my friends know that!

  4. When did you graduate from ASU?
    1960

  5. What was your degree?
    Associate’s Degree – that’s all they offered in those days!

  6. Did you attend other schools (explain)?  
     University of Georgia, B.A. 1962; University of Tennessee, graduate work, 1963; University of Alaska, M.S. Counseling Psychology

  7. Where do you work (place and title)?
    I started at my father’s fish market as a clerk, worked at Mr. Snow’s Laundry as the front boy, was a captain in the U.S. Air Force, started as a counselor and then became director at the Regional Youth Detention Center, then started as the adolescent coordinator and became the deputy director for Community Mental Health. Then I retired, but I still work some!
 

 

  1. What is your favorite memory about ASU? 
    ASU? Kids Day

  2. What is your favorite restaurant?
    Home. My wife, Mary, is a good cook, but I do like the Pizza Joint.

  3. Why are you involved with the Alumni Association? 
    Lots of reasons! Three generations of my family attended ASU. In fact, my aunt Rose was in the first class.

  4. What is your favorite movie?
    Gone With the Wind and Now Voyager.

  5. What did you learn at ASU that is most valuable to you today?
    As they say in Now Voyager, “Go seek and find."

  6. What are current activities that you are involved in?
    ASU Alumni Board, Augusta Lions Club, Governor’s Advisory Council on Mental Health, Augusta Coalition for Mental Health, Richmond County Partnership for Children and Families, Docent for the Augusta Museum of History (Harris House) and Historic Augusta (Boyhood Home of Woodrow Wilson). 

  7. What is your favorite possession?
    My grandfather’s trunk, which he brought to Augusta in September 1900.

  8. What is your favorite vacation spot?  
    Hilton Head.

  9. What is your favorite Alumni Association event?
    The BBQ of course!

  10. What is your favorite color?
    Always blue!

  11. Who is your closest friend from your college days at ASU?
    Sam Johnson.

  12. What professor had the biggest impact on you at ASU, Why?
    All of them were great, but Charles Cordle really sparked my interest in history.

  13. What is one goal you haven’t achieved yet that you are working on?
    This is a hard one to answer. Maybe I don’t have anymore goals. I love where I am! I’m happy!
