Eligible freshmen at Georgia Regents University Augusta will be given the opportunity to earn both their Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees within eight years in the new BS/MD program. The bachelor’s degree is awarded through the College of Science and Mathematics and the medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia.
The BS/MD program, pending final approval from the Provost, will begin fall 2013, according to Rich Griner, chair of the Department of Biology.
“Incoming freshmen who meet the qualifications will have a direct pathway to medical school if they meet the yearly benchmarks. This program will be very attractive to high ability students, and it will help make GRU a destination university,” said Griner.
Freshmen admitted to Georgia Regents University who wish to pursue medical studies will have guaranteed admission to the Medical College of Georgia provided they meet and continue to meet the BS/MD program requirements.
The program provides students with a sound baccalaureate foundation for medical education through a special curriculum and mentoring as well as appropriate technical and professional competencies. It also provides opportunities for undergraduate research, counseling, MCAT preparation, and clinical or research experiences.
“This is a very exciting development for our university. The BS/MD program provides unique educational experiences, excellent advising, and takes the anxiety out of the medical school admissions process,” said Paul Wallach, vice dean for academic affairs of the Medical College. “We are looking forward to recruiting outstanding students right out of high school who are interested in medicine and prepare them for medical school.”
