David Alalof may not have come to Augusta in 1962 to attend then-Augusta College, but he’s quick to say that the school helped him lay the foundation for his future.

Mr. Alalof arrived at Fort Gordon in Augusta via the U.S. Army. While there, he met and married his wife Meryl and they decided to make Augusta their home.

Shortly after, he began school at Augusta College.

Some of the biggest challenges and rewards he faced, came during his time there, he said.

“Being a full-time student while working to support a new family and facing the challenges of building a new business was challenging, but proved to be quite rewarding,” said Mr. Alalof, a 1969 graduate and the 2010 Distinguished Alumnus award recipient.

That business, ACHS Insurance Group, is, today, one of Augusta’s most successful businesses.

But Mr. Alalof isn’t all business. Outside of work, he’s heavily involved in community and civic groups.

Among his community activities, he is vice chair of the ASU Foundation, past chair and vice chair of the Georgia State Personnel Board, a member of the Columbia County Good Government Coalition and president of the CSRA Shield Club, which provides assistance to families of deputies and firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty. In 2006 the Augusta Jewish Community Center voted him Humanitarian of the Year.

Mr. Alalof also enjoys racquetball and traveling, when he’s not spending time with his eight grandchildren.
