The Department of Art had two "firsts" during May: an open house and an Art Gala to recognize Morris Eminent Scholar Emeritus Philip Morsberger and members of the Community Foundation of Augusta who sponsored the publication of a monograph titled Philip Morsberger: A Passion for Painting.
At the gala, a check in the amount of $10,000 was given to the university, and an endowment in the name of the artist was announced. Kristin Casaletto, acting chair of the department, accepted the check on behalf of the university.
"Mr. Morsberger is a highly distinguished artist and could have chosen to pursue his career anywhere-he could have chosen to stay at Berkeley or Oxford. He's raised the level of aesthetic discourse for all of us, and we are greatly pleased at the release of his monograph and at receiving the Philip Morsberger Endowment made possible by the book project donors," she says.
Proceeds from the future sales of the book will go to support the art department. "The celebration of Philip's career and the monetary gift make a wonderful way to end our first year as an independent department and to launch us into things to come," says Professor Casaletto.
Later in the month, an open house gave campus and the community an opportunity to visit the department's new facilities in Washington Hall as well as the ceramics studio.
