Ian Garrison Alumni Spotlight: Ian Garrison

College was a family affair of sorts for Ian Garrison.

The 2001 computer science graduate attended ASU with his sister, Lauren Burroughs. Both received faculty alumni scholarships, which are funded in part by the alumni association.

"My sister graduated in the winter of 2002 with a bachelor's degree in education with an emphasis in English," Mr. Garrison says. "We were both also members of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi."

Mr. Garrison, who is a programmer/analyst at PowerServe, says his ASU degree has served him well over the years.

"The degree I received from ASU means more to me than a similar degree from a larger university," he says. "I feel that the smaller classes and caring professors (there really are too many to mention) provided an environment that encouraged learning that I will never forget."

Academic Background: B.S. in Computer Science (2001)

Favorite Memory about ASU/AC: I first started at ASU during the last year of the quarter system. During the first couple of years, I would attend classes mainly in a group of 6 buildings that I hope many of you will remember. Anyway, it was great to be at ASU during this time-frame because I actually saw the school grow and blossom from the Community College it was into the fine University that it is today.

Most memorable Professor at ASU: Dr. Maynard, Chairman of the Math and Computer Science Department

What are keys to success you have learned: Keep pushing and trying your hardest, no matter where you are at in life. Whether it be in schooling or in a career, never stop doing and being your absolute best.

Challenges and Rewards you've faced: The period during which I was part owner of a company taught me many things about the inner workings of not only a technology centered business, but a small business in general. Going through this whole experience left me with many great memories, but the flipside of the matter is that I am also left with the trials that my partners and myself shared as a small business owners. In the end, I consider the knowledge I gained during this time to be invaluable and encourage anyone who has the opportunity to go into business for themselves to take the plunge.

Current Hobbies/Activities: Trying to hold on to my quickly disappearing youth by traveling around the country and also seeing as much live music as possible.
