A Day Celebration and Alumni Association Barbecue

The annual A Day for Augusta State University campaign to raise friends and funds for the university exceeded its goal by more than $4,000 as the campaign drew to a close on Friday, Oct. 9, with a total of $539, 016.  The campaign, which began on Aug. 11, raised money for scholarships, faculty development, and academic support programs that could not be funded by state dollars.

The campus drive, themed Taking Care of Our Own, was led by ASU professors, Drs. Hubert and Debra van Tuyll, and raised $153,861, surpassing its goal of $135,000. A challenge gift of $10,000 from First Citizens Bank to benefit the Hull College of Business sparked the beginning of the university’s community campaign, led by Mr. John Bell, attorney with the Law Office of Bell and Brigham, on Sept. 15 during the President’s Club Luncheon.

“We are extremely grateful for the participation in this year’s A Day campaign. This campaign speaks volumes of not only the faculty and staff at ASU, but also of the Augusta community,” says Ms. Helen Hendee, vice president for ASU’s development and alumni affairs.

The campaign total was announced at the ASU Alumni Association’s annual alumni barbecue.  This years barbecue maintained many traditions of the past and introduced a new one - fireworks.  “The barbecue planning committee wanted to add a little something extra to the barbecue this year and a fireworks show seemed to be that something extra” says Laura Tilt ’00, ’05, barbecue co-chair.

Alumni and friends and their families enjoyed a fantastic evening of food, fun, and fireworks in the D. Douglas Barnard, Jr. Amphitheatre. Proceeds from the barbecue benefit the Faculty/Alumni Scholarship.

“The event was a huge success with the help of our sponsors” says Tilt.  Make plans to attend next year’s barbecue on Friday, October 8, 2010.
