The Internet has changed the way we communicate with people. People no longer wait for information to come to them - they seek it out.
Social networking, or grouping people together online based on shared interests, is a huge part of that change. Social networking sites such as Facebook cater to hundreds of millions of users. Sites like Twitter send up-to-the-minute updates to more than 14 million users every day.
Social networking is not a fad – it’s a revolution, a fundamental change in the way people receive and exchange information.
For that reason, the ASU Alumni Association has launched a social networking initiative. We're using sites like Facebook and Twitter to build online communities. Alums can use those sites to network with others in their field, keep up with campus news and find out about alumni association events. We’re building online communities of alums and friends of ASU – one thing we all have in common.
Couldn’t make it to this year’s alumni barbecue? We’ve got pictures and video of the fantastic fireworks show on Facebook. Need a getaway? How about a cruise to the Bahamas? The booking information is on Twitter and Facebook. Looking for a business contact in Slovenia? Try Raul Intriago. He’s an ASU business grad who’s the plant controller at Sandoz there. He’s also a member of the ASU Alumni Group on Linkedin.
"The Internet is the go-to place for information these days," says ASU Alumni Association vice president for public relations, Jennifer Hilliard. "Social networking gives the association a global reach - the potential to get back in touch with hundreds of thousands of alums and provide them with a place to actively exchange information about each other and their alma mater."
So where do you start? Go to www.aug.edu/alumni and click on the Social Networking tab. Be sure to read through our guidelines first and then start interacting with other alums like you!
