A $10,000 challenge gift from First Citizens Bank to benefit the Hull College of Business sparked the beginning of the A Day for Augusta State University community campaign, led by Mr. John Bell, attorney with the Law Office of Bell and Brigham, on Sept. 15 during the President’s Club Luncheon. This followed the successful conclusion of the campus A Day component, which exceeded its goal by over $12,000. Led by Drs. Hubert and Debra van Tuyll, the campus theme of Taking Care of our Own hit home as about 86 percent of faculty and staff contributed to the annual fund campaign. The goal for this year’s campaign is $535,000.
Each year, a variety of A Day activities are held for the campus and community to create awareness of the friendraising and fundraising campaign. Highlighting this year’s campaign are a race, a presentation by a noted author, health screenings, music, Wonder Woman, and fireworks. The activities will begin with the Jaguar Jaunt, a 5K road race, on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 8 a.m. Beginning at the Maxwell Alumni House on McDowell Street, runners and walkers will travel through the historic Summerville area and the ASU campus. Prizes also will be awarded in several age groups. The entry fee is $20 on the day of the race.
Adam Shepard, author of Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25, and the Search for the American Dream, will be the featured speaker in the Russell A. Blanchard Distinguished Lecturer Series on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 2:30 p.m. in the Jaguar Student Activities Center Ballroom. Admission is free to this Hull College of Business presentation.
On Wednesday, Oct. 7, the Department of Nursing will hold its annual Health Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Christenberry Field House. Free services will include blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings, body fat analysis, bone density, and more. Reservations for flu vaccines may be made by calling the nursing department at 706-737-1725. Reservations for the H1N1 vaccine have already exceeded the supply, and a waiting list has been established. The cost for a seasonal flu shot is $15 and for the FluMist Nasal Spray, $20. (There is no charge for the H1N1 shot.)
On Thursday, Oct. 8, a Gala Concert featuring baritone Washington Isaac Holmes, a local artist who has performed throughout Europe, will be held in the Maxwell Theatre at 7:30 p.m. The concert, hosted by the Department of Music, raises money for scholarships for students in the music department.
On Friday, Oct. 9, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at ASU will present Wonder Woman Against the Nazis! Fascism and Feminisms in Comics 1941-1985 at 10 a.m. in 170 University Hall. Admission is free.
Later that evening, A Day will culminate with its annual Alumni and Friends Barbeque that begins at 5:30 p.m. in the D. Douglas Barnard, Jr., Amphitheatre. The Drovers Old Time Medicine Show will perform, and a fireworks display will begin at dusk.
