Alumni Spot Light: Dr. Molly P. Howard
Dr. Molly Howard, 1997 graduate of Augusta College and Principal of Jefferson County High School was named the 2007 Principal of the Year for the National Association of Secondary School Principals at the annual convention in San Antonio, Texas last February.
Dr. Howard also earned a Master's degree from Augusta College before receiving her doctorate at Georgia Southern University in 2000. "ASU is ideal as one does not have to go far away or necessarily attend an Ivy League school to achieve at the highest levels," says Howard. "One simply needs a community whose values are evident in what they do and how they do it." She sights Dr. Jessie Stewart as her most memorable professor at Augusta College. Dr. Stewart aided Howard in several of the skills she learned while at AC including shared problem-solving, building relationships, dedication to a clear and meaningful goal, and a passion to do the work.
Dr. Howard started her teaching career in 1977 as a Special Education teacher. She later became Principal of Jefferson County High School in 1995 and is still serving in this position. In her twelve years as Principal of Jefferson County, the school has been recognized as one of the leaders in achievements in Georgia. Under her leadership, Jefferson County High School has received national recognition for "High Schools that Work" as well as many state awards for achievement.
When asked about challenges and reward throughout her career, Dr. Howard states that some challenges are trying to bring all stakeholders to a common vision, shared set of beliefs, and a clear vision. However she has seen many rewards during her career. These include the many individual and in turn community successes she has received. Howard states that, "Changing lives for the better through education and opportunity and thus having a positive impact on the community" as a great reward.
Outside of the school, Dr. Molly Howard is married and is very enthusiastic with two children and five grandchildren. She also enjoys scrapbooking and cooking for a crowd. When she is free from all of her other duties, Dr. Howard lists her ultimate enjoyment as spending time fishing with her husband. |
