ASU President Announces Retirement

President William A. Bloodworth, Jr., announced at the Fall Convocation August 9 that he will transition out of his 18-year presidency, with his final day being June 30, 2012.

“Making the decision to give up my job as president has been very difficult for me,” he said. “But there’s a time for everything—and now is the right time for this decision.”

He said that the decision was his alone and based primarily on his desire to return to full-time teaching and scholarship. In June, he notified then-chancellor Erroll Davis of his desire to step down as president and later discussed it with the University System’s new chancellor Hank Huckaby. more>

A Day for ASU Exceeds Goal!

Over 1,000 supporters of A Day for ASU came together Oct. 14 in the D. Douglas Barnard, Jr., Amphitheatre to celebrate the success of the annual fundraising drive and enjoy fireworks, kids games, Sconyers barbecue, and music by the Sassy Brass Band.  The campaign raised more than $26,000 over its goal of $545,000, despite the current economic climate.

“It is amazing to see the enthusiasm for Augusta State University during the A Day campaign each year.  The campus and the community really come together to support all of the great things that are happening here,” said Rhonda Banks, director of the annual fund.

“Private support is important to the university, and these A Day gifts provide additional resources to meet needs that cannot be met through state funding, such as scholarships, faculty development, and some academic support programs,” she said.

The two-part annual fund drive included a campus campaign, led by alumna Katherine Sweeney, ASU registrar and director of admissions. The campus fundraising goal of $145,000 was exceed by more than $174,000. The community campaign was led by alumnus Stacy Tallent, president of Health Center Credit Union.

“The leaders of our A Day campaign provided great leadership, and we are grateful to them for their commitment to the campaign and to the university,” added Banks.

Thanks to the phonathon and five one-time major gifts totaling $230,070, the final total for the A Day campaign was $800,913.

ASU Literacy Center Receives Grant From Bi-Lo Charities

More than 250 children and their families will benefit from a $20,544 grant to Augusta State University’s Literacy Center from Bi-Lo Charities. In announcing the grant recipients Oct. 24, Bi-Lo president and CEO Michael Byars said, “Everyday our store teammates demonstrate the power of leading with their head and with their heart.” The grant is one of 17 awarded to local non-profits by Bi-Lo.

“We are very pleased to be one of the recipients of the Bi-Lo Charity Grants program,” said Paulette Harris, director of ASU’s Literacy Center and Cree-Walker Chair in the College of Education and Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Special Education.

The current resources in the Literacy Center are both limited and outdated, according to Harris. “We don’t normally have enough computers available for our students to use, and if a computer is available, it may not have the appropriate software because of the incompatibility,” she said.

The Bi-Lo grant provides funding for computers, laptops, printers, a wireless router, and software for training tutors as well as tutoring sessions. It also will support the center’s project, Feeding the Minds of Children and their Families, through the purchase of nutritious snacks for the children and family members who accompany clients to the sessions.

In addition, an electronic kiosk is being added, which will be used in the Literacy Center’s lending library for checking out books, CDs, and DVDs. The kiosk also will be used to promote upcoming events and literacy services.

ASU’s Literacy Center provides free year-round individual tutoring to children, youth, and adults throughout the area. Free tutoring is provided by ASU students and trained volunteers.
