Meet Mr. and Ms. ASU

During the Half-time of the ASU Men’s basketball Homecoming game, the crowning of Mr. and Ms. ASU took place. It seemed evident that the Martin’s took the crowns!

John Martin represented The Arsenal Society of Medical Studies, is a senior at Augusta State, and is majoring in Biology. John plans to graduate from Augusta State in December 2011. Sasha Martin represented Zeta Tau Alpha, is a Sophomore ASU, and is majoring in Pre- Dental. After graduation, Sasha plans to continue her degree at the Medical College of Georgia in their Dental program. Both, John and Sasha participated in a series of Homecoming events to gain points in order to win the crown. There was also a campaigning process and voting areas for the ASU student body to vote on Mr., and Ms. ASU.

Financial Aid Deadlines Established!! In an effort to serve our students expeditiously, the FAO has established submission deadlines for each term. The annual financial aid deadlines for each term are: Fall Semester - March 1, Spring Semester - October 1, and Summer Semester - March 1. Your financial aid file must be complete by the financial aid application deadline in order for your file to be processed prior to the published fee payment deadline. The financial aid application deadline means that all required documents must be submitted by the published deadline and not that you’ve filed your FAFSA.

Hope Scholarship to Change

Gov. Nathan Deal proposed changes to the HOPE Scholarship that are now being considered by the state legislature for action. The governor’s proposal divides the HOPE Scholarship into two programs: the regular HOPE Scholarship program and a special HOPE Scholarship program for the top 10 percent of HOPE Scholars.

Eligibility for the regular HOPE Scholarship would remain a 3.0 GPA in high school. A student would have to maintain the 3.0 GPA in college to keep the regular HOPE Scholarship. The HOPE Scholarship amount for FY2012 would be set at 90 percent of the tuition amount of each of the USG institutions in FY2011. The book and fee allowance would be eliminated.

The second program offers a full tuition HOPE Scholarship for students earning a 3.7 high school GPA, in combination with a minimum SAT or ACT composite score of 1850 or 26, respectively, and requiring a 3.5 GPA in college. It covers full tuition at any USG institution. It does not cover books or fees.

Learning Support classes would no longer be covered by HOPE Scholarship payment.

The proposal provides $20 million in funding for a 1 percent interest loan program for students with financial need. The loan would be forgiven entirely if a student teaches in a STEM field after graduation for the same number of years as the student received the loan. The proposal to fund the need-based component first adopted in 2008 is very significant and reflects a strong commitment to maintain access to college for an important group of students. This proposal, along with the intent to continue the current practice in which a student can receive both HOPE and PELL, will help students dealing with financial pressures that could otherwise force them to abandon college goals.
