ASU Wins Big At Chick Fil A Collegiate Championship

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Augusta State men's and women's tennis teams had a successful showing at the 2003 Chick Fil A Collegiate Championship over the weekend, with both teams scoring big victories. 

The Jags' Zai Hai and Victor Meza each won their bracket of the tournament, with Hai defeating Harry Hahn of ABAC 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the Flight 2 bracket, while Meza defeated #4 Marcelo Ferreira of Georgia College & State University in the Flight 3 championship 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. 

In other men’s action Mike Vandenabeele lost in the Flight 6 singles to #2 Gabriel Viega (Abac) 5-7, 6-0, 6-1.  In the Flight 1 bracket, Raul Intriago fell in the semi-finals to #1 Harshit Sharma of USC-Aiken 6-4, 6-1.  Guillaume Payment in Flight 4 had to retire due to illness.

In Lady Jags' action Ana Skafar took the Chick fil A Championship by defeating #2 Dominique Cassetori.6-2, 6-1, while Patricia Zurita upset #1 Rachel Sanchez 6-1, 6-1.  Patricia Lozano defeated #3 Lee-Deane Elmore 7-5, 6-3 in the Flight 3 consolation finals.

In doubles action, the men's team of Mike Vandenabeele/ Mathieu Leblond lost in the semi-finals of the Flight 3 doubles to Olinus Olisson/ Emmanuel Nkoueleue 8-4 of ABAC.  

The Lady Jags faired better, with the the doubles championship being taken by the #1 team of Skafar/Zurita, who defeated #2 Otovia Bastos/ Dominique Cassetori (USC-Aiken).

The tournament, which ran from Friday to Sunday and was held at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta, Ga. featured teams from host school, Augusta State, Queens University of Charlotte, Morehouse College, Queens College, Eckerd College, Wingate University, USC-Aiken, Georgia College & State University, and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College .
