Lady Jags Tennis Defeats UNC Pembroke in PBC Action

The
Augusta State women's tennis team defeated UNC Pembroke Monday afternoon in
Peach Belt Conference tennis action 5-4. With the win ASU snaps a three
match losing-streak and improves to 8-10 overall and 2-8 in conference play
while UNCP falls to the .500 mark on the season at 8-8 and 1-5 in Peach Belt
Conference competition.
The Lady Jaguars won two of the three doubles matches to open the day. In the #1
spot Hayley Bakker and Patricia Zurita defeated Andrea Vukcevic and Naomi Ellis,
8-4. Ana Skafar and Patricia Lozano defeated Erin Saltzman and Abi French in the
#2 position, 8-1. Lauren Losoncy and Shannon Gentry of UNC Pembroke won by
default at the #3 slot.
In singles competition, Andrea Vukcevic's winning streak was snapped when she
lost to Ana Skafar 6-4, 6-3 as the #1 player. For Skafar it was her 14th singles
match win of the spring. In the #2 slot, Ellis was beaten by Zurita, 6-2,
6-4. As the #3 player, Bakker defeated Saltzman 6-1, 6-3. French won in
three-sets over Melissa Bruzzese, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 in the #4 position. Losoncy
defeated Lozano as the #5 player after winning the tiebreaker 7-5 in the second
set. She won 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Gentry picked up a victory in the #6 position with
a win by default.
The Lady Jags conclude their regular season Friday, April 4, as they travel to
Wilson, N.C. to face Mt Olive and Barton.
