N.C.----The Augusta State University tennis teams swept an NCAA Division II
twinbill Friday afternoon at the Wingate University tennis facility. The number
27 Augusta State women prevailed 6-3, while the ASU men edged Wingate 5-3.
The ASU women are 8-6 overall, while the ASU men improve to 8-9 overall. The Wingate women are 3-3 overall, while the Wingate men fall to 4-3 overall. Augusta State visits Fayetteville State University Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
The Lady Jaguars won a close match at number one doubles en route to the non-conference victory. The ASU duo of Ana Skafar and Norma Rouira topped Wingate sophomore Erin Donovan (Lexington, S.C.) and freshman Alexis McDaniel (Acworth, Ga.) 9-8 (7-1) at the top doubles flight.
The number 24 player in NCAA Division II, Skafar defeated McDaniel 6-3, 6-1 at number one singles. Wingate’s only singles win on the court came at number three singles, where sophomore Courtney Luce (Knoxville, Tenn.) defeated Rouira 6-4, 6-1.
Wingate won number three doubles and number six singles by default due to an ASU injury. The Bulldogs will open South Atlantic Conference play Tuesday, visiting Mars Hill College for a 2:30 p.m. match.
In men's action, the Bulldogs won two of the three doubles matches to open the afternoon, but the Jaguars rallied to win the top four singles matches to take the win.
Wingate senior Brandon Richardson (Statesville, N.C.) teamed with junior Kotaro Noguchi (Miyazaki-si, Miyazaki-ken, Japan) to take a 9-8 (7-5) win at number two doubles, while senior Marius Dan (Hunedoara, Romania) and junior Jacobo Uribe (Medellin, Colombia) took an 8-5 decision at number three doubles.
Wingate's only singles win came at the number six spot, where Bulldog freshman Joe Van Cavage (Fort Myers, Fla.) defeated Jaguar sophomore Guillaume Payment 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. Augusta State won the top four singles matches in straight sets. The number five singles match did not finish.
