Ga. -- The 29th-ranked Augusta State women’s tennis team has earned an
at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament Mid-Atlantic Regional next weekend in
Savannah, Ga.
The regional appearance marks the fifth time since 1997 the Lady Jaguars will
have competed in the NCAA Tournament, and first since 2001. In all, seven Peach
Belt Conference-member institutions will make up the eight-team Mid-Atlantic
Regional, which will be hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State, the top seed, and
Columbus State. Also earning a bid from the PBC were North Florida, Clayton
State, Columbus State, Georgia College & State and Kennesaw State.
ASU also qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2001. The
Lady Jags are 0-4 all-time in NCAA Tournament play.
After posting a 15-9 overall record in 2004, ASU will take on top-seeded and No.
2-ranked Armstrong on Friday, May 7 at 2:00 p.m. The Lady Pirates are undefeated
this season at 24-0 and are one of only three undefeated teams in the nation.
The championship match is scheduled for Saturday, May 8 at noon.
The 16 regional winners will advance to the finals May 12-15 in Altamonte
Springs, Fla., as part of the first-ever NCAA Spring Sports Festival. The
festival will feature six NCAA Division II Championships.
