No. 2 Armstrong Atlantic Defeats No. 33 ASU At

Ga. – The No. 2-ranked Armstrong
Atlantic State Lady Pirates remained unbeaten on the 2004 season with a 5-0 win
over fellow Peach Belt Conference foe Augusta State in the first round of the
2004 DII Women's Tennis Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates (25-0) opened up the match by sweeping all three doubles matches, dropping only four points in the process. The top-ranked doubles duo of Zsofi Golopencza and Laura Peaty defeated Ana Skafar and Norma Rovira, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles. Dziyana Nazaruk - playing for the first time since March 31 after returning from an injury - teamed with Luisa Cowper to defeat Ashley Abrams and Maria Zevallos, 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Caroline Grage and Manuela Emmrich completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Patricia Lozano and Patricia Zurita at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, the Pirates took quick wins from Emmrich at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1 over Abrams and from Peaty at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1, over Lozano.
AASU advances to face GC&SU in the Mid-Atlantic Region championship match at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 8. AASU will be playing for its 10th straight trip to the NCAA's Round of 16, while the Bobcats will be trying to get back to the Round of 16 after last year's trip. AASU defeated the Bobcats, 9-0, in their only prior meeting this season.
