Augusta State and Valdosta State split a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
ASU took the first game 6-1 behind a solid pitching effort from freshman righthander Steven Voigt. In only his third start, Voigt (2-0) struck out five and walked just one batter in seven innings, giving up four hits and one run.
Kevin Owens went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI and Alex Sickman was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Alex Walker and Darren Swift each scored two runs. Chris Tyler worked two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out one.
Steve Turner took the loss for the Blazers, surrendering five hits and four runs in 1.1 innings. Adam Harmych logged 4.2 innings of relief and was charged with six hits and two runs. Thomas Tripp gave up two hits over the final two innings.
In game two, VSU pounced on Jaguar starter Brandon Iverson (0-1) for three first-inning runs and made it stand up in a 4-1 victory in seven innings.
Logan Pierce and Blaine Wilson each tallied a pair of hits for the Blazers. No Jaguar had more than one hit.
Glen Lemke earned the win, allowing six hits and just one run with four strikeouts and two walks. Justin Lamb closed in the seventh to earn the save.
Iverson was charged with three hits and three earned runs in 0.2 innings. Blake Pockrandt got out of the first inning and went 5.1 innings overall, yielding four hits and a run. Tyler Godwin pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing a walk.
The Jags and Blazers play the rubber game of the series on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 12:30 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
