Freshman Bryson Smith jacks three homers in rout

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State roughed up West Liberty State for 11 runs in the first three innings and went on to a 25-3 rout of the Hilltoppers Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Jaguar Field.

Freshman third baseman Bryson Smith jacked three home runs and had eight RBI to highlight the offensive onslaught for ASU, which improved to 14-11 with the victory.

Six Jaguars had at last two hits, including junior catcher Derek Bosch, freshman second baseman Justin Roberts and Smith. Roberts and Bosch drove in four runs each, with Shannon Wilkerson and Darren Swift collecting three RBI each. Swift, Kevin Owens, Wilkerson and Barnes all added two hits.

ASU pounded out 20 hits, including 14 extra-base hits. Michael Fritz, Barnes and Bosch all scored four runs each.

Jaguar junior lefty Ben Dukes earned the win, improving to 2-1 on the season. He allowed six hits and three runs in 6.1 innings. Freshman Scott Strickland worked the final 2.2 innings, allowing just a pair of hits with a pair of strikeouts.

ASU hosts Paine on Wednesday, March 12 at Lake Olmstead Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
