AUGUSTA,
Ga. – Augusta State pulled off a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of Armstrong Atlantic State Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the pair of wins, ASU improved to 17-11 and 4-4 in the PBC while the Pirates dropped to 15-7 and 3-5 in the league.
Sophomore reliever Kyle Payne (3-1) got the win in the first game, working the last 1.2 innings in the 9-8 victory. After Armstrong tied the game with three runs in the top of the eighth, freshman third baseman Bryson Smith scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch after drawing a walk to lead off the inning.
Justin Roberts, Shannon Wilkerson, David Barnes, Alex Walker and Smith all had two hits in each game.
Junior righthander Brandon Iverson (2-2) allowed just five hits in seven innings in the second game as the Jags jumped on top early and posted a 10-3 victory.
The Jaguars pounded out 24 hits in the two games, including seven doubles.
ASU and Armstrong wrap up the three-game set Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Jaguar Field adjacent to Christenberry Fieldhouse on the Forest Hills campus.
