AUGUSTA,
Ga. – Augusta State downed Wingate University 8-2, on
Wednesday evening at Lake Olmstead in a non-conference match up.
With the win, ASU improves to 20-14 overall.
The Bulldogs opened the game with a two-run RBI from Aaron Knowles. The Jags answered back by plating three runs in the bottom of the first with an RBI from Kevin Owens, a sacrifice fly from Alex Walker and an RBI double from Jorge Virguez making the game 3-2.
ASU earned another two runs in the bottom of the third when Clay Haynes nailed a two-run single putting the Jags up 5-2.
In the fifth inning Haynes slammed a double into center field to drive in Virguez taking the score to 6-2.
The Jags plated a run in the sixth inning with an RBI from Logan Demsey knocking in Michael Fritz and again in the seventh inning with an RBI by Shannon Wilkerson off a walk to win the game 8-2.
For the Jags, Haynes went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI, while Virguez went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Michael Fritz went 3-for 4 with two runs.
For the Bulldogs, Nick Siega-Riz went 2-for-3 with a double.
Tyler Godwin received the win for the Jags, pitching 2.0 innings. The Jags had multiple pitching changes including Patrick Lowes, Chris Greer, Blake Pockrandt and Scott Strickland.
Garrett Klouts got the loss for Wingate pitching 2.0 innings giving up five hits and three runs.
p> The Jags are back in action this weekend with a three-game series against Georgia Southwestern. ASU kicks off the series with a doubleheader on Saturday Mar.29, at 12:30 pm at Jaguar Field.
