Jags Take Hurricanes, 7-6
ASU senior Kevin Owens slams two-run homer

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State took on the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes this afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference match up. The Jaguars edged the Hurricanes 7-6 despite a rain delay.

The Jags opened up the game plating two runs in the first inning when Kevin Owens slammed a two-run homer to drive in Michael Fritz.

ASU picked up three more runs in the second inning taking the lead to 5-0. Shannon Wilkerson knocked a double to bring in Alex Sickman and Bryson Smith hit a single driving in Fritz and Wilkerson.

The Hurricanes came back with a rally in the third inning to take the lead 6-5. Francisco Gomez started off the inning with a single RBI brining home Nick Rex. Gomez then scored on a passed ball followed by a two-run single by Daniel Stokes. Byron Haynes then came to the plate and nailed a double to plate Stokes. Jared Allen closed out the inning with a single RBI putting the Hurricanes up by one run.

Augusta State turned in two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Jorge Virguez picked up the sixth run scoring on a passed ball tying it up 6-6 and Sickman picked up the seventh run advancing around the bases also scoring on a passed ball.

After the end of the seventh inning weather played a factor delaying the game but that would not stop the Jags from taking the game 7-6 over the Hurricanes, holding them scoreless in the last two innings.

Fritz, Sickman and Smith all had multiple hits while Owens had a homerun. D.J. Decker led the Hurricanes going 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Jags' Patrick Lowe earned the win pitching 7.2 innings with four strikeouts and only two hits; the Hurricanes' Andrew Whiggum received the loss.

The Jags are back in action tomorrow Sunday, Mar. 30, at 12:30 p.m. with a doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern to close out the series at Jaguar Field.
