Jags Split With Hurricanes
ASU junior Logan Dempsey hits grand slam

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State took game one 13-2 while Georgia Southwestern rallied back for a 10-7 win in game two to split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

In game one, the Jags booked four runs in the first inning with a grand slam from junior designated hitter Logan Dempsey, driving home Michael Fritz, Shannon Wilkerson and Bryson Smith.

ASU tallied another four runs in the second inning with a lead off double from Fritz and an RBI from Kevin Owens, Smith and Alex Walker to bring the score to 8-0.

Two more runs in the third inning by Alex Sickman and Fritz put the Jags up 10-0. A Wilkerson homer in the fifth brought the score to 11-0 and two more runs in the seventh inning from Owens and Smith would hold the Jags at 13-0.

The Hurricanes worked for a rally in the ninth inning but were stopped short at two runs, by Daniel Stokes and Byron Haynes. The Jags took game two of the series 13-2.

For the Jags, Wilkerson went 2-for-3 at the plate while Fritz and Smith also went 2-for-3 with a double each.

Brandon Iverson took the win for ASU pitching eight innings with six strikeouts. RM Cozza received the loss giving up eight runs off of nine hits.

In game two, the Hurricanes got on the board picking up three runs in the first inning with RBI from Francisco Gomez, D.J. Decker and Daniel Stokes. ASU picked up a one run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI from Smith to drive home Wilkerson.

The Hurricanes picked up another run in the second inning of a triple RBI from Nick Rex. The Jags tied up the score 4-4 in the bottom of the inning knocking in three runs off of three hits with singles from Jorge Virguez and Fritz with a triple from Wilkerson.

Georgia Southwestern added two more runs in the fourth inning off of a throwing error from second base to take the lead 6-4. A home run from Wilkerson in the bottom of the inning would cut the score to 6-5 and two more runs in the fifth from the Jags put them up 7-6.

A last minute rally effort by the Hurricanes in the ninth inning picked up four runs, from Gomez, Decker, Mullis and Reeves that would be enough to take the game 10-7.

For ASU, Wilkerson batted his first cycle of the season going 5-for-5 at the plate while Fritz, Virguez and Owens all had multiple hits. For the Hurricanes Nick Rex, Francisco Gomez, D.J. Decker and Patrick McCarthy all tallied numerous hits.

Steven Voigt took the loss for the Jaguars, allowing four runs, while Colin Duffie was able to pick up the win with four strikeouts.

The Jags returns to action Tuesday, April. 2, when they host Erskine. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Jaguar Field.
