ASU senior Clay Haynes drives in five runs

WINGATE, N.C. – The Augusta State Jaguars pounded out 19 hits to top the Wingate University Bulldogs 13-6 in NCAA Division II baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Augusta State improves to 23-19 overall, while Wingate falls to 18-29 overall.

Jaguar senior designated hitter Clay Haynes drove in five runs to lead the ASU offense. Senior first baseman Kevin Owens drove in three runs, while sophomore outfielder Shannon Wilkerson scored three times. All nine starters collected a hit for the Jaguars, while seven different players had at least two hits.

Bulldog freshman catcher Matt Crump led the Wingate attack, going three-for-five with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman second baseman Scott Kelly and junior center fielder Nick Siega-Riz had two hits each for the host Bulldogs.

The Jaguars got the scoring started in the fourth on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Alex Sickman. ASU junior second baseman Jorge Virguez added an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Bulldogs answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, with freshman outfielder Cale Rogers scoring from third when Kelly was caught attempting to steal second. Augusta State plated four more runs in the fifth. Owens got the scoring started with an RBI single. Haynes delivered the big hit, a three-run homer to right center, making the score 6-1 ASU.

Wingate again had the answer in the bottom of the fifth inning, getting an RBI single from junior catcher Dustin Hurdle to cut the deficit to 6-2.

The Jaguars once again put four runs on the board in the sixth. Owens got it started with a two-run single. Augusta State would then load the bases and score the next two runs via a hit batsman and a walk.

The Bulldogs got a two-run homer from Crump in the bottom of the sixth to cut the margin to 10-4. A Butler High School product, Crump has two home runs this season.

Augusta State added to its lead in the eighth, getting a sacrifice fly from Haynes, followed by an RBI triple from freshman outfielder Alex Walker. Sickman added an RBI single to make it 13-4.

Wingate responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases, then scored two runs when freshman infielder Tyler Womer reached on an error.

Augusta State sophomore right hander Tyler Godwin got the win in relief for the Jaguars, improving to 3-1 on the year. Wingate junior right hander Richard Allred took the loss for the Bulldogs. Allred allowed three runs on four hits in four innings of work. He struck out one ASU batter.

Wingate returns to action Friday, when they travel to Tusculum College for a 7 p.m. start. The Bulldogs return home Tuesday, when they host Limestone College at 6 p.m. Augusta State returns to action Saturday, when they host No. 13 USC Aiken for a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
