ASU takes game one, 12-10; FMU takes game two, 5-0

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State closed out their three game series against Francis Marion Sunday afternoon, in a Peach Belt Conference match up. ASU took game one 12-10 and the Patriots shutout the Jags in game two, 5-0.

In game one, ASU jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs in the first inning with a double from Shannon Wilkerson, a single from Clay Haynes and a triple from Tyler Marzofka.

The Patriots came back in the third inning picking up four runs, starting off with a homerun from Justin Green followed by runs from Jared Barkdoll, Preston Shuey and Vince Farfaglia to tie the score at four all.

The Jags picked up another two runs in the fourth with a two run homer from Kevin Owens and would hold the lead to take the Patriots 12-10.

Kevin Owens led ASU going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Haynes did his part going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI while Wilkerson, Marzofka and Evan Smith all had multiple hits. Justin Greene paced the Patriots with three hits off of four at bats with three runs and an RBI.

For ASU, Chris Tyler picked up the win pitching 5.2 innings giving up eight runs with eight strikeouts. Erik Sommerville received the loss pitching two-thirds of an inning giving up three runs off of three hits.

In game two, the Patriots came back strong picking up three runs in the first inning of which two were homeruns.

Francis Marion would hold the Jags scoreless as they picked up two more runs, one coming in the third from from Vince Farfaglia and one in the fourth from Greg Phelps. FMU took the game 5-0 and the series 2-1.

Greene led the Patriots picking up his fifth homerun of the series while Greg Phelps, Barkdoll and Preston Shuey all had multiple hits.

Zane Petty took the win for FMU pitching seven innings with three strikeouts. Zack Farry came in to close allowing only two hits in two innings. Jacob Watson received the loss, pitching all nine innings with seven strikeouts.

The Jags are back in action Tuesday April 22, when they travel to take on Newberry College. The game is set to start at 6:00 p.m.
