AUGUSTA,
Ga. – Augusta State hosted Newberry College Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match-up.
The Jaguars downed the Indians 8-2 improving to 28-25 on the season while dropping the Indians to 20-29.
ASU got out to a four run lead in the first inning with a led off single from Justin Roberts, followed by a triple from Bryson Smith and a double from Shannon Wilkerson.
The Indians picked up their first run in the top of the fourth when Jovan Rohena hit a double to get on base and John Kirkland got the RBI. Newberry picked up their second run in the top of the fifth with a wild pitch to bring home Derek Bley.
Holding the Indians at two runs the Jags picked up two runs in the fifth with a two-run homer from Wilkerson.
ASU closed out the game with a run in the seventh inning from Smith, and a final run in the bottom of the eight with a walk from Justin Roberts.
Wilkerson led the Jags going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and five RBI. Roberts, Smith, and Tony Baker all had multiple hits. Rohena paced the Indians going 2-for-4 with a run.
Brandon Iverson (6-5) earned the win for ASU pitching four innings and only allowing four hits. Help from the bullpen came from Adam Mathis, Ben Dukes and Blake Pockrandt to aid in the win. Chris Roman took the loss giving up four runs.
The Jags are back in action this weekend as they host Georgia College & State for Senior Day to close out their season. Their will be a single game on Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday set to start at 1:30 p.m.
