Six ASU seniors honored on Senior Day

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Georgia College & State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Augusta State on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Jaguar Field.

The Bobcats jumped ahead 5-2 in the first game and went on to a 9-4 victory in a contest that was delayed 1:16 by rain and lightning.

Danny McCorkell went 3-for-5 for GCSU while Sean Harrell had a pair of hits. Derek Johns drove in a game-high three runs and Harrell had a pair of RBI. Seniors David Barnes, Clay Haynes and Jeremy Armstrong, along with sophomore Evan Smith, all tallied two hits each for ASU and Armstrong drove in two runs.

Michael Newman (5-3) tossed 5.2 innings of one-hit relief to earn the win, striking out four along the way. Starter Shaun Monica worked the first 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs.

Junior Chris Tyler (1-5) took the loss for ASU, yielding eight hits and seven runs – four earned – in 4.1 innings.

In game two, the Bobcats scored in each of the first six innings and cruised to a 12-6 victory.

GCSU booked 18 hits off three Jaguar pitchers. Chandler Snell went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Pete Paris was 3-for-6. Brooks Robinson, Derek Johns, Richard Pirkle and Andrew Evans each drove in a pair of runs.

Haynes, Shannon Wilkerson and Tony Baker had two hits each for ASU. Wilkerson jacked a leadoff homer to dead-centerfield in the sixth inning -- his 16th of the season -- which matched current Jaguar assistant coach Chris Cooper for the most homers in a single season since Tarry Stokes posted 25 homers in 1994.

Clete Jessup (5-3) scattered nine hits and and six runs over 6.0 innings to pick up the win. Jay Clark closed out the game, allowing just one hit over the final three innings.

Junior lefty Ben Dukes (3-2) surrendered eight hits and five runs in 2.2 innings. Freshman righthander Blake Pockrandt was charged with five hits and five runs in 2.1 innings before Brandon Iverson came on in relief, allowing five hits and two runs in 4.0 innings.

The contest marked the final appearance for six ASU seniors – Armstrong, Barnes, Haynes, Michael Fritz, Darren Swift and Matt Landis.

ASU wraps up the regular season with a 28-27 overall record and a 9-18 mark in Peach Belt Conference play. The sweep lifted the Bobcats to 32-22 overall and 15-12 in the PBC.
