Erskine jumped out to a 4-0 lead Tuesday afternoon and went to a 7-2 victory over Augusta State in non-conference baseball action at Grier Field.
The Fleet (3-0) pounded out 11 hits, including three home runs. The hosts got a solo home run from Matt Schneider in the second inning and added three runs in the fourth. Ross Hanna capped the inning with a two-run homer and then Hanna lined a solo homer in the eighth.
ASU sophomore shortstop Tony Baker and freshman Bryson Smith recorded two hits each. Smith and junior catcher Derek Bosch drove in the only runs for the Jags (1-3), who tallied eight hits.
Junior lefty Ben Dukes (0-1) took the loss for ASU, allowing six hits and four earned runs in 3.2 innings. Patrick Lowe worked 3.0 innings of relief, yielding four hits and two runs – none earned – with a walk and strikeout. Chris Tyler closed out the final 1.1 innings and was charged with a hit and a run in 1.1 innings.
Erkine starter William Buzhardt (1-0) earned the win, surrendering six hits and one run in 7.0 innings while striking out six and walking two.
ASU travels to Gaffney, S.C., this weekend to face Limestone in a three-game series. The Jags and Saints will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, with a single game set for Sunday, Feb. 10 at 12:30 p.m.
